Below are the various workups I've done on the rebuild pieces I'm looking at with prices from the latest catalogs I have
and the prices I could find on the various websites. I also called each place
and asked some relevant questions on various bits and pieces. I started off looking at a basic rebuild kit and gasket set from
PAW. My catalog
was a
bit older, but it looked like the prices were current enough for some basic
guestimating and planning. I also wanted to see about getting grooved cam bearings to ensure
good oil flow to the drivers side lifters, and last time I checked, I had to go
to a Buick specialist like PAE
Enterprises, Poston, or
TA Performance to get them. I'm also
pondering getting my cam and lifters from a Buick-specialist - the idea of a
generic "stock replacement" cam from PAW didn't really interest me, though they
are included below for price comparison purposes. I also knew that I wanted
modern-style neoprene front and rear main seals, which is turned out were only
available from Buick-specialty sources. The same goes for some of the
replacement bolts I knew I'd want (or in some cases, need) - Buick-specialty
sources. So, each of the workups contain the right bits and pieces to make this
as much of an apples-to-apples comparison as possible.
When I called PAE Enterprises I had the chance to talk with Jim Burek - he's quite the
guru - and get some details sorted out in my mind and move my planning forward a
good bit. It turns out lots has changed since my original research - even since
the Guide to Buick Performance Engines book was written - and there are far more
neat goodies for me to spend my money on than I have money to spend on them.
After going over the comparisons and getting a reply back from Jim, I'm going to
be using the PAE Enterprises list below.

Interesting Bits and Pieces
As I poured over various catalogs and websites, I ran into other interesting
parts and remembered various relevant details that I needed to jot down
someplace so I wouldn't lose them. This is that place.
The distributor gear oiler kit is only recommended with a high volume oil
pump, so I removed it from my original kit listings above. Also, with the newest
grooved HD cam bearings, the lifter galley bypass line is not needed, so it's
been moved here as well.
