The body tag (or VIN tag as it is known or later model vehicles) contains four basic pieces of information - the series, the year, the build plant, and the vehicle serial number.

The first digit indicates the series. This should agree with the more detailed information on the cowl tag.

4	Series 40 - Special
5	Series 40 - Super
6	Series 60 - Century
7	Series 70 - Roadmaster
8	Series 700 - Limited

The second digit indicates the year. This should agree with the more detailed information on the cowl tag.

D	1957
C	1956

The third digit indicates the build plant. This should agree with the more detailed information on the cowl tag.

1	Flint, MI
2	South Gate, CA
3	Linden, NJ
4	Kansas City, KS
5	Wilmington, DE
6	Atlanta, GA
7	Framingham, MA
8	Arlington, TX

The remaining digits are the vehicle serial number.
