1958 MODThe 1958 MOD line on your cowl tag indicates the body style which should always agree with the STYLE line on your cowl tag. The prefix (if present) indicates the model year. This is redundant with other information on the tag.
The model code is the specific model for your Buick. The style code should repeat this information with some extra details. This is useful in identifying the specific model of your Buick in just three digits and this code is (in my experience) the most often used way to refer to the specific model of your Buick.
I have seen cases where two stars are stamped onto the tag after the model code. I do not yet know what this means.
STYLEThe STYLE line on your cowl tag indicates the body style which should always agree with the 1958 MOD line on your cowl tag. The prefix (if present) indicates the model year. This is redundant with other information on the tag.
The first digit indicates the GM division.
The second digit indicates the Series. Note that 40 and 60 series are grouped together as they are built on a similar chassis and are different than the larger 50/70/700 series.
The final two digits are the body style code. Note that "Hardtop" designates a style where there is no upper frame around the door glass and there is no body pillar between the front and rear doors (aka, no "B pillar"). It is the same basic body style used in a convertible, but with a "hard top".
There may be extra letters after the style code to indicate additional information about the body.
